After indulging in a ‘Geet Big Shake’ at The Great British Cupcakery in December, it quickly became one of my favourite places to catch up with friends and family over a slice of cake.
The bakehouse and parlour is situated on Queen Street of Newcastle Quayside and is the creation of mother and daughters; Carole, Leoni and Naomi. In 2012 they decided to make their much loved hobby of baking into a full time career and have been tantalising the tastebuds of Northerners ever since.
On one visit, I noticed their rather impressive afternoon tea so bought vouchers for my Mum and Gran at Christmas. 6 months later we finally got around to visiting and it was well worth the wait!
As we made our way to the table, we eyed up all the ‘Geet Big Shakes’ piled high with cream, cookies and donuts. My Gran had never seen anything like them.
Despite warning my brother about how filling they were, he couldn’t resist ordering the Eton Mess one. With thick strawberry milkshake, jam, cream, meringue and shards of strawberry chocolate it certainly looked indulgent.
Unlike other Afternoon Teas, both scones and cakes were full size. The cheese scone was served warm and the cream scone was piled high with lashings of jam and thick piped cream.
Accompanying these was a chocolate brownie, raspberry blondie and an Eton mess cupcake all of which were delicious but too much to eat in one sitting. The Great British Cupcakery must be aware of this though and offered us boxes to take any leftovers home.
Although Afternoon Tea at The Great British Cupcakery is priced slightly higher than other places in the city, at £20 per person, it’s definitely the best value for money. Bookings must be made in advance though as the Cupcakery can get very busy, especially on a weekend.
It was lovely to spend a leisurely afternoon with my Mum, Gran & Brother and the vouchers proved to be a great present!
